1. Who can apply as a Family Class Immigrant?

You must be one of the relatives or family members listed below to be eligible for sponsorship. You must be your sponsor's;

  • spouses, common-law or conjugal partners 16 years of age or older
  • parents and grandparents
  • dependent children, including adopted children, who
    • is under the age of 22 and does not have a spouse or common-law partner
    • became a full-time student before the age of 22 and has been substantially dependent on a parent for financial support since that time
    • is financially dependent on a parent since before the age of 22 because of a disability or medical condition.
  • children under 18 years of age whom you intend to adopt
  • brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren who are orphans, under the age of 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship
  • any other relative if your sponsor has none of the above relatives or family members, either in Canada or abroad.

2. Who can be a sponsor?

To sponsor any of the above listed relatives or family members who want to become permanent residents of Canada, you must;

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent residents living in Canada
  • be 18 years of age or older
  • meet certain income requirements
  • provide financial support for the relatives or family members you are sponsoring for;
    • 3 years if you are sponsoring your spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner
    • 10 years if you are sponsoring your, or your spouse's, common-law or conjugal partner's dependent child who is less than 22 years of age, or until the child turns 25 years of age, whichever comes first
    • 3 years if you are sponsoring your, or your spouse's, common-law or conjugal partner's dependent child who is 22 years of age or older
    • 10 years if you are sponsoring any other person not mentioned above
If you have previously sponsored relatives or family members who have received social assistance, you may not be allowed to sponsor another person.

4. How to apply as a Family Class Immigrant

  1. A sponsor first needs to apply to sponsor him/her relatives or family members.
  2. Both a sponsor and sponsored relatives or family members need to sign a Sponsorship Agreement. Dependent children under the age of 22 do not have to sign the Sponsorship Agreement.
  3. A sponsor must sign an Undertaking in order to promise to support sponsored relatives or family members financially for 3 to 10 years so that they will not need to apply for social assistance.
  4. Sponsored relatives or family members must promise to make every effort to become self-supporting (unless they are elderly).
  5. Sponsored relatives or family members must then apply for immigration.
